It seems the world has been full of bad news these days and I see this when my clients come into my office. Everyone is depressed, sullen, and cranky; myself included. We’re beating ourselves up daily when we read the paper, watch the news, or walk down the street and see the frustration on peoples’’s faces. There must be some way to make ourselves feel better, right?
“So, what do I do?”, asked a client and friend of mine. It was a good question, and I was prepared to answer it.
I simply stated, “I read the comic strips.”
My friend laughed and asked if I was serious, to which I replied that I was indeed. Ever since I was a kid, my go-to source of humor has been The Peanuts gang, Beetle Bailey, Garfield, and Blondie. Seeing Snoopy bring his bowl to Charlie Brown at supper time, watching Dagwood munch on an enormous sandwich at midnight, or even the sight of Garfield spending the day sleeping was enough to brighten my mood.
The comics have allowed me to get away from whatever was bothering me and laugh, even if just for a couple of minutes. They always gave me the chance to not think about what was happening outside my room and now, as an adult, what is going on outside my study.
This is what works for me, but it may not be your outlet. However, I encourage you to find an activity that clears your head for a little while. Take a walk, watch a movie, or spend some time with nature; whatever works. It doesn’t have to be an all-day thing, just take a minute to laugh and get away from it all.
Whenever I’m down, I know Snoopy as the Red Baron is going to cheer me up. I know I’m going to be transported to a place reserved just for me at a time when I need it the most. Find your place and take a break. The world will wait for you to return, but you may come back feeling a little bit better about the world.
Take my advice for what it is… It’s just, AS I SEE IT!
